MGMT = Electric Feel

Damn! I was gonna post the New MGMT video for their 3rd single, 'Electric Feel', but it's embedding has been disabled by the band it seems. Sucks! They had a video for Electric before, but this new one is way better. Click HERE to check it out directly on youtube.

I have to say I wasn't the biggest fan at first, but they've grown on me and now I can't get enough of them. Their debut album 'Oracular Spectacular' has got to be one of the best albums of 2008 so far. Also just found out Dave Fridmann (Flaming Lips, Mercury Rev) worked with them on the record. How great is that!? No wonder the album sounds so good. Dave's one of the best sound engineers/producers on the planet! He makes every band he works with sound that much better. How great is it to get to work with him on your first record out!

Here is an interview they did for NME plus them Live on Letterman and a few mash-ups/remixes I have for them. I particularly like the Hip Hop mash-up DJ Topcat did with them and Talib Kweli. Works perfect.

Ladytron

Just added some Velocifero cover art! -CM.
Just got a new Ladytron track, 'Black Cat' from their forthcoming 4th album 'Velocifero' which comes out in June. Pretty sweet track. Love the long instrumental intro, the dark synths and that banging beat, which builds until her vocals kick in. Is it in French or German? Either way it's a pretty impressive lead in track. If the rest of the album is as good as this we're in for a treat. At least for me, I love the dark electro-pop stuff.
They're also gonna be playing in Miami @ Studio A around the time of the release on June 12th. Should be a good show their last performance here was pretty impressive and long overdue! I remember people telling me they weren't that good live before the show, boy were they wrong!!

Why I Love This Disco Thing::A New York Story

Wednesday, March 26th, yours truly, Off the Radar and the guys from Apartment Thursdays, will present two of NYC's best for Winter Music Conference!

JACQUES RENAULT & LEE DOUGLAS!!!!!!! PLUS JUST ADDED :: JUSTIN MILLER (DFA)!!!

(Sorry if I come across as being overly excited, but I would be lying a**hole if I said I wasn't)

For the past year amazing disco edits, re-edits, re-works... (guys, honestly, the "re" phrase? I digress, that's a whole other write up) At the forefront of the best of them you'll find Lee Douglas & Jacques Renault. No disrespect to Todd Terje, Lovefingers, Dj Spun and endless others who are absolutely jaw dropping, but this post is about the aforementioned, so lets delve into their music a bit. Both of these cats hail from Brooklyn and have earned their chops creating and editing that ever beautiful Disco Beats for quite some time. They've mastered the art of the edit and can turn 70's obscure disco didley's into a full on club experience.

Now before you get the wrong idea, when I say 'Club', I am not referring to mega glowing crucifixes, neon advertisments, and distorted beat arrangements (which is alright if that's your thing) I'm refering to a gathering of smiling people, dancing, strutting, feeling a groove.

If you don't feel me, listen to the interlude intro to Marvin Gaye's 'Got to give it up', then multiply that feeling by 100! That's Lee Douglas & Jacques Renault! It's no secret to the rest of the world or influential labels like DFA with which they've worked/spun with. They've graced turntables across the globe spreading their disco gospel. Church is in session March the 26th!

No Kinda Boys

This one is going to be REALLY quick. Things are busy at work and a guy's gotta have his priorties.

Anyways, The Junior Boys are still working on the follow-up to their brilliant sophomore album This Is Goodbye. In the meantime, they hooked up with Germany's Get Physical Label (M.A.N.D.Y., Booka Shade)to put together Body Language Six which includes an exclusive new Junior Boys track.

Among the artists the guys have selected are Matthew Dear, Studio, Supermayer. It's a really well put together set. It might be a little minimal for some but the Kelley Polar track is INSANE.

Anyways, I am ambivalent about the Junior Boys track. It really belong as the album closer but I think they felt it strange to end with their own track and dumped it in the middle of some others.

Take a listen (Oh, it is a DJ mix CD, so the tracks are seamless between each and you are going to hear the start of the next song at the end):

MP3: No Kinda Man (YSI)

And Miami, they're coming back this way for WMC on March 27 to Studio A . If you missed them last year, you have a second chance! I'm wondering if this is a DJ set though? Last year was a full concert with Lo Fi Fnk opening. Great show! And I even got to hang out with them during their sound check during the day.

Oh and remember Inner City? Good life... Good life... Good life... Good life... well they're back, kinda, with a remix of another song from the same period. What makes it a big deal is that Simian Mobile Disco is the one that produced the remix. Paris Grey's vocals take me back. (When's the Soul II Soul reunion?)

Check out the video for Good Life at Nefarious Girl!!

MP3: Big Fun (Simian Mobile Disco Remix) (YSI)

*UPDATE: It's a WMC DJ set. So I wonder if this Body Language album is a preview? Or if they go in a different direction when DJing live?

Just Go and Let Me Know How It Was

Times I wished I was in NYC.... (oh but Holy Ghost! is going to be in Miami soon...).

WAAAKKEE UP!

Do I make you hungry baby?

I cannot enough of this song. Hustler was released on Kitsune (record label I heart) back in 2006 and it is getting re-released next month with some new mixes.

If you are in NY, go see Simian Mobile Disco perform live at the Apple Store in Soho TODAY! Part of the CMJ craziness.

Last night I was reminded that summer is over...

I think I hyped that Arcade Fire website a bit much. It was designed for the release of their newest single the title track off of Neon Bible. Nothing more, nothing less.

The site reminds me of a shallow version of Feed the Head (www.feedthehead.net).
While you can spend a good part of an hour playing around with the latter, The Arcade Fire site feels a little anemic. It is still worth a click though to be able to control Win Butler around. They are calling this a video to Neon Bible making it the first song on the album to have a music video. (Does this mean the MTV awards are going to have a new category?)

But you went to the site for the music and not the fancy Flash animations anyways. AAANNNDDD how about that show on Saturday in NY's Randall's Island? You know the one with Les Savy Favv, Blonde Rehead, LCD Soundsystem AND Arcade Fire? Seems like it was THE show to end the summer concert season.

The Arcade Fire wrapped it up with an encore IN THE AUDIENCE, covering Violent Femme's Kiss Off. This is from a friend's camera. She sent me the video as soon as she got home. You can hear them them singing along with the band.

If you can ignore the annoying chick...

"I wish I had my camera... I wish I had my camera... I wish I had my camera... "

This video is on fire all over the internet today.

This track was one side of a split 7" with Arcade Fire and LCD Soundsystem sold exclusively (until eBayers list theirs...) while they were on tour together this past summer. It is a cover of a France Gall song composed by Serge Gainsbourg.

Toronto Vids - Interpol

So in anticipation of the Interpol tonight at University of Miami's Convocation Cente-- I mean Bank United Center, here are a couple of short video clips we took when Interpol hit the stage V Fest in Toronto.

They looked bored as always. Played a solid set (...minus the one false start they had. Paul Banks looked a little embarrassed in the monitors. The drummer frustratingly tapping out the beat their second time around.) but for some reason it just did not feel loud enough.
We were noticeably further back than we were for Bjork but I have seen them in festivals (and clubs) before and they definitely feel more comfortable in the dark and smoky confines of a club (nothing beats their show at Ice Palace a few years back in Miami - 2003 - Wow).

So in honor of their performance tonight, I give you a remix of their current single Mammoth and an orchestral version of the fantastic album opener Pioneer to the Falls. I am not sure how I feel about Mammoth yet. It is definitely a change for them, Banks vocals do not even sound like him. The rework by Erol Alkin smartly stays away from the current electro movement and just beefs up the drums and high hats and makes the song a bit more dance floor friendly.

MP3: Mammoth (Erol Alkin Rework) (YSI)
MP3: Pioneer to the Falls (Orchestral Version) (YSI)

Aaannd here are the videos of Interpol peforming Obstacle 1. You can obviously get better quality videos from other users of YouTube.

Toronto Vids

When I say amateur, I mean it. Eddy's videos are better than mine so I am posting his. I might try and edit the ones I have because I do have a few of Bjork's literally explosive ending.

Bjork and her army of brass instrument players

Anyways, here we have a video of her performing Joga. And an MP3 of another version of her latest single (and concert opener) Innocence.
Technology was at the heart of her performance.
Touch screens are not just for iPhones...

MP3: Innocence (Ghostigital Untouchable Innocence Still Amazes 12" Remix) (YSI)

UPDATE: Pitchfork has some even better pictures of her recent ATL show. Damn I really want to see her in New York but it looks like I am going to miss her by 2 weeks.
