An Interview w/The Faint!

The Faint were kind enough to do an Interview for Off the Radar! I sent Jacob from the Faint some questions about a whole bunch of stuff and here are his answers... Great interview if I do say so myself. Not too shabby for my first ever! Hope you like it, more in the works!

1 - Hey guys big fans of The Faint at Off the Radar. Why has it taken so long to release this new record? Last we heard from you guys was 2004's Wet from Birth.

We're pretty slow at writing songs. We want to make sure that all five of us are happy with the outcome of each song we write. But this time took us an especially long time because we built a studio after we were done touring for Wet From Birth. We hired contractors and completely remodeled the building we practice in. The whole project took about two years, and we were writing that whole time. I think it was a bit of a blessing that it took so long for the studio to be built because it allowed us extra time to polish the songs for the record. It took us about five months to record the songs and two months to mix them. It took about another month to master it, but that's another story.

2 - Notice you guys are releasing the new record on your own label. Why is that? What happened with Saddle Creek who had released your previous records?

We've always talked about putting out our own records, and with the industry being in such a weird transitional state, it seemed like it might finally be the right time.

3- How Does your new record 'Fasciinatiion' compare to your previous ones?

It's hard for me to say. I can't really be objective about it. I feel like we've incorporated our favorite elements of each record into this one, as well as some new techniques that we experimented with in the studio. The process of writing the songs was even a combination of the methods we've used on the previous records. Some of it was written in that five-dudes-in-a-room style that we wrote Blank-Wave and Danse Macabre in, and some of it was written in the demo-and-record-as-we-go method we used on Wet From Birth. I think we got the best of both worlds.

4 - What do you think of the current state of the Music Industry? Blogs/Internet/Bands like Radiohead Releasing their Albums for Free, etc? Where do you think it's all heading?

It's exciting to see everything shifting. It seems like the heyday of major labels is over. They were so excessive with their expense accounts and A & R departments. We know first hand from having many of them take us out to fancy dinners. I think it means more artists releasing their own music and making money off of touring and licensing. At least that's the way it seems to be working at the moment.
I love reading blogs and finding out about music through the internet. But nothing beats seeing a good live show.

5 - What are your musical influences? What are some bands/artists you liked growing up?

I've listened to all kinds of stuff throughout my life, and I feel like it's all had an influence in some way. Fugazi, Gravity Records stuff, Men's Recovery Project, early Human League, Aphex Twin, David Bowie. I don't know. Tons of shit.

6 - How old were you when you first started playing music? Did you have a musical family? What was the first instrument you played?

My mom played the piano and can sing pretty well. She taught me the basics on the piano and then I kind of taught myself chords and scales from there. I never really learned proper fingering technique, I don't think. I played the French horn for a year when I was 13. I've had a guitar and a bass for the last 15 years, but I don't play them too much.
The rest of the band has all different kinds of stories about how much formal training they've had and what kinds of bands they've played in previously. For example, Dapose was in a death metal band, while Todd majored in classical guitar in college.

7 - How did The Faint members first meet/decide to start making music?

I think Todd, Clark and Joel were all looking for something new to do since Todd wasn't really supposed to skate anymore after he had knee surgery. They ended up seeing a local show where some bands that eventually became Cursive and Bright Eyes were playing and they got inspired to do the same thing. They thought, "These kids are our age and they're doing it. Why can't we do it to?" I had the same kind of revelation with hardcore bands when I was in high school. I had a hardcore band for a while that I broke up for good when I joined the Faint. I told them that it didn't matter because Black Dice was doing everything we were doing anyway, only better. That was back when Black Dice was a hardcore band.

8 - What new bands/artists have you been digging recently?

Late of the Pier is my favorite new band. I like the Whip. The new Kills record is good. So is the new Ratatat.

9 - Do you think music is better now or do you prefer older/classic stuff?

I just did an interview for NPR that was all about Yaz, so I listened to their first record again and it's really good.
In general I think that music is getting simpler and dumber, like lowest common denominator style. I guess I'm talking about pop music mostly. Like people did better work when the technology made it so much harder, and that seems really fucked up to me. I'll listen to a new band and think, "This is boring. It just sounds like Bruce Springsteen. There's no no ideas here. Now I just want to listen to Bruce Springsteen." And I'll put on the Boss's record and it's way better. But then something new will come along that totally blows me away and I'll think, "Wow, what a great time to be alive!" Like SebastiAn or Oizo or something that sounds really modern and uses new technology in a great way.

10 - You guys all still live in Omaha? What's it like there? How's the club scene there? Do you guys go out dancing/Djing alot? What do you do for fun besides music?

There is not much of a club scene here. Todd and I started a party with this kid Derek who plays in Tilly & The Wall. It was really fun for a while, but then we got busy with our bands again. There are gay clubs and the occasional night here or there but that's about it for dancing. So no, not a lot. House parties are kind of where it's at. A lot of people go to shows here now, which is great.

11 - Do you prefer recording or touring? Do you guys get on each others nerves while on tour or have you have you figured out a way to keep that from happening already?

They're both great fun and also can be very stressful at the same time. Nobody really gets on my nerves on tour, but I can imagine that I get on other people's nerves. I'm going to try to keep that from happening as much as I can on this next tour.

12 - What's your process for writing new music? Any new gear you've gotten/been working with alot lately?

We don't have one method. The best method is when Todd has a song comprised of a vocal melody, hopefully some lyrics, and a chord progression he likes. Otherwise we'll try to come up with progressions for him to build from. Sometimes just a beat and a synth sound is all it takes.
We use all kinds of stuff in the studio. I like to try my synth parts on all different synths and see which one sounds the best.

13 - I always love your guys visuals while your on tour/performing. Anything exciting for this tour? Who does the visuals for you guys?

Thanks! We do them ourselves and our sequencer keeps it on time with the music. We're switching it up for this tour, but that's what we're working on now so I shouldn't say anything or I'll jinx it.

14 - Any advice for up and coming new bands?

Get a fuel efficient vehicle for touring.

15 - Anything I've missed or you'd like to say to your fans?

Come to a show and dance with us. If you're in Florida, please be patient. We'll be there in a couple months!

Here's one of the Projection Visuals I was talking about for 'Desperate Guys', plus a couple classic tracks from Wet From Birth. Enjoy and go buy their new record 'Fasciinatiion' when it's out August 5th! The Geeks Were Right, their first single off the new album is available on Itunes now, for the backbreaking price of .99!

Coachella Is Trippin'

I kept on talking about this the whole weekend. Coachella is going EAST! Coachella's promoter Goldenvoice is moving the music festival east this summer! It will take place at Liberty State Park, across the Hudson from lower Manhattan. It will not be named Coachella per se but RADIOHEAD is rumored to be headlining! Road trip anyone? The regular Coachella line up should be coming out today. The eastern Coachella details are still being finalized but it seems it will be in direct competition with the Vineland Festival also in New Jersey around the same time.

URB Magazine:

Portishead is confirmed to headline this year's Coachella festival on Saturday night, according to a high-level source. The same source unequivocally denied rumors that Radiohead would appear at Coachella, but did confirm that the group would play the East Coast festival being planned by Coachella promoters Goldenvoice/AEG Live . The full Coachella line-up will be announced this Monday.
I think this is the first Portishead post I write that actually has NEW songs of theirs! Take a listen to a new instrumental studio track and a couple other tracks from their December ATP Nightmare Before Christmas show (first full performance in over a decade!). I cannot wait to hear the studio versions of these songs. Ten years is a long time to wait between albums and I wonder if they can still be relevant.

It is impossible to see EVERYTHING at Coachella, so I was super-selectetive (that's a Miami phrase for you) highlighted what I think I would check out if I went. I chose acts that I have never seen (Okay, I have seen Kraftwerk but it's KRAFTWERK!). Acts that I think would present a good show (just because the music is good does not mean the show is entertaining). And those that I think will never make it to my neck of the woods (you would be surprised at the number of national tours that do not make it to Miami - and I don't want to start the "Miami doesn't have a music scene" argument right now... It apparently has something...). So this list is not necessarily complete, I am sure that if I was walking by a stage and Bonde Du Role was pumpin' out the booty jams I would stop and break a sweat or two (it's in our blood down here).

The real question is who is playing in Jersey?!?!?!

Oh and yes, Friday would be the day that I "leave early" from the show. Jack Johnson? WTF? Sorry.

Beep beedeep beep beedeep beep beep

Whatever that sound is when there is a news flash.

Fischerspooner has a new track out! AND it's on the new Kitsune Maison Compilation Vol. 5. After a quick (?) first listen it seems Kitsune has MORE than made up for let downs that were Volumes 3 and 4.

For the new single, the band does not stray too far from the formula of the last album. You can hear echoes of Never Win appear in the chorus and synths. But I think they still had plenty of things to explore with the sounds of Odyssey (at least they didn't go back to electroclash).

As far as the compilation, you have a nice even mix of established artists and newbies to make for an interesting listen. It's out January 14th. Run to you local record shop (Sweat) and pick yo'self up a copy!

Way to save yourself Kitsune. Just as 2007 was ending. Bravo.

Buzz In Our Backyard

This weekend you have a chance to catch Black Kids in their own backyard (they are from Jacksonville, FL) before they cross the big pond to play shows in London. The interest this band is creating is reminiscent of the The Arctic Monkeys or The Go! Team. And their music is not far off either. Infectious pop songs, girl group harmonies, 80’s synth-pop. I swear I can hear The Cure in the song Hit the Heartbreaks.

The ENTIRE Wizard of Ahhhs demo is available for FREE from their MySpace profile. The band is currently unsigned but picked up Quest Management who also handles Bjork and Arcade Fire to represent them. And it seems they will not be unsigned for long.

So if you live in South Florida don't miss your chance to catch them LIVE this Saturday (11/24/07 ) at Circa28 for CircaSaturdays. They have already played with the likes of Lo-Fi Fnk and Tiger City and you know we are fans of those bands.

More info about Black Kids at their website (http://blackkidsmusic.com/). Here is song where they channel The Cure and a remix not available on the EP.

And no, I don't plan on posting tracks from the album. (Spend the 45 pence minimum - credit card processing fee - and get your own! For free purchases, no credit card is necessary and no additional fee is charged.)

Remixes, rarities, b-sides are a possibility though.

The band has worked on the follow-up to 2003's Hail to the Thief for over two years, beginning in early 2005. This release will end the longest gap between Radiohead albums since the beginning of their career.

Last night I was reminded that summer is over...

I think I hyped that Arcade Fire website a bit much. It was designed for the release of their newest single the title track off of Neon Bible. Nothing more, nothing less.

The site reminds me of a shallow version of Feed the Head (www.feedthehead.net).
While you can spend a good part of an hour playing around with the latter, The Arcade Fire site feels a little anemic. It is still worth a click though to be able to control Win Butler around. They are calling this a video to Neon Bible making it the first song on the album to have a music video. (Does this mean the MTV awards are going to have a new category?)

But you went to the site for the music and not the fancy Flash animations anyways. AAANNNDDD how about that show on Saturday in NY's Randall's Island? You know the one with Les Savy Favv, Blonde Rehead, LCD Soundsystem AND Arcade Fire? Seems like it was THE show to end the summer concert season.

The Arcade Fire wrapped it up with an encore IN THE AUDIENCE, covering Violent Femme's Kiss Off. This is from a friend's camera. She sent me the video as soon as she got home. You can hear them them singing along with the band.

If you can ignore the annoying chick...

"I wish I had my camera... I wish I had my camera... I wish I had my camera... "

This video is on fire all over the internet today.

This track was one side of a split 7" with Arcade Fire and LCD Soundsystem sold exclusively (until eBayers list theirs...) while they were on tour together this past summer. It is a cover of a France Gall song composed by Serge Gainsbourg.

Another Mysterious Website With A Date

Go to the Arcade Fire website at www.neonbible.com and go past the flashy bibles and poke the big eye with your mouse pointer. It sends you www.beonlineb.com.

Whaddaya get? Another date. October 6th (this Saturday). What could the kids be giving us? They have a monster stop on their tour with LCD Soundsystem @ Randall's Island, NY that day (Les Savy Fav, Blonde Redhead and Wild Light are also on the same bill) but that cannot have anything to do with the site.

Has the whole Radiohead radioheadlp7.com website already changed the mindset of the industry or did Arcade Fire already have this planned? Most likely the latter rather than the former but it is a funny coincidence.

Two secret websites announcing something from prominent (in one case gigantic) indie bands.
Crazy to use Radiohead and indie in the same sentence. Maybe they are giving away their next album too!

While I was at the Southern most tip of the continental U.S....

Radiohead announced their new album.

And it is being released in 10 days.

As a digital only download.

Price at whatever you want to pay for it.

There is more. Read here. Or here. Or just Google Radiohead In Rainbows. There is a deluxe "discbox" coming out in December (preorder now) and a regular ol' CD version sometime next year (if they ever sign to a label since they are basically an unsigned band right now).

I think all of the major label execs just threw up a little bit in their mouths.

Hello everyone.

Well, the new album is finished, and it's coming out in 10 days;

We've called it In Rainbows.

Love from us all.

Jonny

Young man, what is the meaning of this?

Hoax or for real? The publicist for Radiohead says, "I know nothing of any official site by that name."

That's tomorrow, Saturday, 10am (Miami time).

There is a visitor counter there. Doesn't seem like too many people are waiting.

Out of Retirement? Nah.

Gorillaz are set to release D-Sides a following to their b-sides/rarities comp G-Sides from 2001.

Check out the track listing to D-Sides below. The collection will come in double-disc standard and deluxe editions, and will hit UK retailers via Parlophone on November 5 (and worldwide - aka the U.S. on November 7).

Who said you couldn't come out of retirement? Even if it's for a quick buck. I'm a sucker, I'll probably get the Deluxe Edition anyways.

Did They Predict An Award In The Near Future?

Klaxons won the Nationwide Mercury Prize (it's sponsored now... ugh) for best British or Irish album last night in London in a surprise victory over Amy Winehouse, the Arctic Monkeys and Jamie T (also Maps, Bats for Lashes, Dizzee Rascal...). For those that do not know, the prize is known to be awarded typically to those British bands that are off the radar or less commercial (at least until the award is won). Think of it as the Bristish version of the Shortlist Music Prize.

Previous winners include: Arctic Monkeys, Franz Ferdinand, PJ Harvey, Gomez, Portishead, Suede...

I have to admit I am content with their choice. Some of the nominees had already been nominated in previous years and won. So picking a new comer for this award seemed right.

Nu Rave has probably one of the most irritating genre names created by industry execs and music snobs at an attempt to discredit the style but it caught on. The reincarnation of 80's day-glo probably did not help it gain street cred but the Klaxons are a solid band. When the album was released the sound was new and (though heart-attack inducing) refreshing. It was rave music but played by a band. Novel at the time.

Did I mention Golden Skans is my favorite song Klaxons song? The SebastiAn Remix is honestly pretty amazing. The way it starts it can be used to resuscitate a stopped heart.

MP3: Gravity's Rainbow (Acoustic Version) (YSI)
MP3: Golden Skans (SebastiAn Version 1.2.0 Remix) (YSI)
MP3: Golden Skans (Surkin Remix) (YSI)
MP3: Golden Skans (Kaiser Chiefs Cover) (YSI)
MP3: Golden Skans (Mark Ronson feat. Daniel Merriweather) (YSI)

So let's forget that expensive designer hoodies and glo-sticks and check out an award winning band.

Go buy the original on the Klaxon's debut Myths of the Near Future.

What's Going On...

I have been out of it for a few days, still recovering from a cold that is kicking my ass. I have a backlog of music to introduce you guys to, but in the mean time, some news...

  • DFA is starting a new record label Death From Abroad (how cute), focusing on music outside of the U.S. (Mock & Toof, Altz, Gucci Soundsystem, etc... etc...).
  • Basement Jaxx are lending their productions skills to Karel Appel latest installation at the Tate Modern Museum in London entitled Hip, Hip, Hoorah!
I thought I had more, must be the meds I'm on.

News on the Portishead Front

Fresh off of the Portishead Blog (*blink* are we that close to a new Portishead album?!?!?)...

so i'll have to do that. once i've found me camera.

ever since Gordon Brown became PM they have gone a little quiet on this subject.
i do hope rumours of Mr Brown lack of interest in climate change aren't true.
