Moon over...[insert your city here]

Tonight the solstice moon comes out! Look to the east and you will see a giant rising in the sky. The phenomenon could possibly be attributed to the ponzo illusion. From NASA:
see caption

After all these years, scientists still aren't sure. When you look at the Moon, rays of moonlight converge and form an image about 0.15 mm wide on the retina in the back of your eye. High moons and low moons make the same sized spot, yet the brain insists one is bigger than the other. Go figure.

A similar illusion was discovered in 1913 by Mario Ponzo, who drew two identical bars across a pair of converging lines, like the railroad tracks pictured right. The upper yellow bar looks wider because it spans a greater apparent distance between the rails. This is the "Ponzo Illusion."

Either way if the weather is right, you should an amazing evening sky. Take pictures and post them back! I'm going to try and sneak into my friend's soon to be new apartment in my building which has a PERFECT view of downtown Miami. So hopefully I'll get some nice moon over Miami shots.

That picture above is not the moon though, it is the cover for Studio's next release, Yearbook 2 coming out next week which is a compilation of their most recent remixes. I have been playing some of these out (if I see the moment is right, mood it is critical to these songs) and they are well received. So glad I am to see them finally get put together. In fact I personally vouch for the first three tracks. All are amazing. Preview the album here.

Also, listen to how they transform Kylie's track. From disco diva to almost Stevie Nicks mysticism.

I turn the radio on... Hey world! I've had enough...

Beep beedeep beep beedeep beep beep

Whatever that sound is when there is a news flash.

Fischerspooner has a new track out! AND it's on the new Kitsune Maison Compilation Vol. 5. After a quick (?) first listen it seems Kitsune has MORE than made up for let downs that were Volumes 3 and 4.

For the new single, the band does not stray too far from the formula of the last album. You can hear echoes of Never Win appear in the chorus and synths. But I think they still had plenty of things to explore with the sounds of Odyssey (at least they didn't go back to electroclash).

As far as the compilation, you have a nice even mix of established artists and newbies to make for an interesting listen. It's out January 14th. Run to you local record shop (Sweat) and pick yo'self up a copy!

Way to save yourself Kitsune. Just as 2007 was ending. Bravo.

Gildas & Masaya @ KITSUNE MAISON 5 GOLD EDITION RELEASE Ryogoku Kokugikan TOKYO

Kitsune Teaser

Even the graphic is a tease, just pieces of people flashing on the screen. This is a snippet of an upcoming Kitsune Mix CD entitled BoomBox curated by Jerry Bouthier (BoomBox resident). For this compilation, Parisian label Kitsuné teamed up with London’s Club BoomBox to create the mix.

Let me tell you at 5 minutes it is one heck of a tease. And Kitsune has thrown every heavy hitter their licensing crew could get their hands on. They throw tracks at you left and right and if you don't get out of your cubicle and start dancing when it starts playing... well... you're hopeless.

Alas, it is only a tease. So you are telling me there is a longer version of this?

The production on this is what you expect from Kitsune... Dance floor perfection. And to think, Kitsune started as a feshion label (well still is...).

Here is a new release from Jurgen Paape, one of the founders of Kompakt Records (Germany). His releases are rare but you can tell from listening they very controlled and planned.

This Isn't Your Parent's Tour Guide...

I have been sitting on this track for a bit. It is a collaboration between Bpitch Control artists Ellen Allien and Apparat. Taken from 2006's LP Orchestra of Bubbles. It is interesting to see Apparat stray a little further from his IDM beginnings to something with a more structured sound.

It also appears on the most recent Timeout compilation The Other Side: Berlin. Looking at the track listing for this series, I am impressed with Timeout's willingness to showcase some underground music. Timeout basically picks an artist to curate the tracks on the CD. Other curators include Fischerspooner (NY), Black Strobe (Paris) and Damien Lazarus (London). I have all the discs in the series which on the flipside of the disc has the artists themselves touring their respective cities and giving hints of places that they like to visit, eat, and shop. (There is a sneaker store that I keep forgetting to visit when I am NY).

The first three were released at once a while back and I had begun to wonder whether the series was dead or not. However, why did they change the cover art? I like it when a series has a consistent look on my shelf. The new one sticks out like a sore thumb (at least it's a cute sore thumb with Ellen's photo on it...).

MP3: Way Out

I Got That... Feeling All Over...

Adult Swim released a new (and free!) compilation entitled Warm And Scratchy with tracks by The Rapture, Les Savy Fav, 120 Days, Broken Social Scene, and a whole bunch of other indie artists.

What? Free? That is what I first thought. And this is not your run of the mill, O.C., Laguna Beach, indie for a second compilation either. The Raveonettes!!

Go run and get yourself a copy. They even include artwork for your iPod (or whatever other MP3 player you nonconformists have).

MP3s: Adult Swim - Warm and Fuzzy

Sample: The Raveonettes - Dead Sound
