The Denzels 'Slow Death' EP has been thrown into a lot of my playlists ever since meeting one of the band members out at a bar in Brooklyn a few weeks ago. The Denzels surf laced, melancholic indie rock is just catchy. Their songs are well written and recorded which makes it simply just really easy to listen to. It's a dash of The Drums, The Strokes pop sensibility, with just a touch of The Walkmen's shoe gazed guitars. They're a melting pot of New York cities most successful acts. The snare and guitars off the track "Montrose Next Door" are sonic romance. Can't wait to hear more from these guys. Download the full (and free) EP off their bandcamp!
Italian producer Schlock! that we posted about previously here sent us news of his New EP 'Star Whores' consisting of remixes/bootlegs that he's done over the last couple of years. A mighty fine collection that shows his range. Love his style, it's subtle and beautiful electronic dance music right along the lines of the stuff we post on OTR. Think you guys are gonna dig it. Best part is all the remixes are available as Free Download's via his bandcamp page. Can't complain about that!

Ready for lots of good music stuffing righttt now?!
So I don't know about all of you, but a couple of months ago somebody showed me NPR's music site that includes many live concerts from lots of bands we all love and new ones we can discover. The full concerts run from 30 mins up to 2 hours, some also include interviews. They also have the "Tiny Desktop" Video Series, which includes bands playing acoustic sets in the NPR office, running from 10-20 minutes. Sometimes an acoustic set really sheds light on how great the voice and instruments sound and gives a band that may be more rockable in concert the chance to be a lot softer, which I really love. The cost to listen to these jewels is free well because it's public radio, but still something free we can all appreciate. You can stream either two sections on theNPR links above or you can subscribe to download them via iTunes.
I just listened to The Walkmen's SXSW full concert (which I'm listening to again as I write this). It's definitely one of those gifts worth unwrapping. During the set they play 2 tracks from their upcoming album (TBA), however the band is hoping this year. The set includes many audience favorites. Pitchfork also does a lengthy interview with them here.
Just like Walkmen's track "In the New Year" from their 2008 album You & Me, my favorite line is "It’s gonna be a good year". That is especially how I feel about music this year, particularly for The Walkmen's release, Broken Social Scene (May 4), The National (May 11), LCD Soundsystem (May 18), and Arcade Fire (TBA). Wow!! Those are most of my all time favorite artists. Just from the look of May I can hardly keep my colored socks on!

I love finding out about up and coming bands. I love when said bands give away their EP for free. I love when the EP is REALLY GOOD. Todd Goldstein of the now defunct Brooklyn band Harlem Shakes has been writing and recording under the name ARMS since 2004. In 2009 when Harlem Shakes disbanded he brought in Tlacael Esparza to play drums and Matty Fasano on bass and vocals. Since then they have been writing songs together and recently put out an EP as a preview of what you can expect from their debut full length. The music itself is vocally driven progression of musical layering. The guitar and drums create a perfect little craddle for the melancholic songs. Check out one of the many good tracks off the EP below.

Then you, like me will be very happy to know you can check out this amazing show that SFA did in NYC's Highline Ballroom in September in support of their latest album 'Dark Days, Light Years' for Free! They incorporate many of their big hits which makes for an almost greatest hits type set. Seems Danger Mouse & Sparklehorse put together an album which was gonna accompany David Lynchphotographs called Dark Night of the Soul.
For the project they enlisted different singers to contribute vocals for each of the tracks.
Not just any singers mind you but, some of the biggest names in the indie music world like Jason Lytle (Grandaddy), Gruff Rhys (Super Furry Animals), Frank Black (Pixies), Iggy Pop, Flaming Lips, James Mercer (The Shins), Julian Casablancas (Strokes), Suzanne Vega & even David Lynch himself sang on a couple tracks. Pretty amazing huh! I know I was impressed.
Seems like the album might not even see the light of day as David Lynch is having some problems with the record label EMI. Oh man! I hope they figure something out.
In the meantime NPR has it up on their website, so you can preview the whole album or individual tracks. Heard the whole thing last night and it's great!

So I was about to do a post about Chester French who was recommended to me when I saw this post/flyer on Miami New Times about Chester French doing a FREE Acoustic Set Wednesday at 3:30 like 20 blocks from my place! Sweet! Perfect timing!!
Not sure were Culture Kings is. Think it's near to were Rag Trade/Amendment XXI used to be, but if you can make it I definitely recommend checking them out, especially for FREE! Not too much of that nowadays. Get out of work early or take a late lunch or something. They have a great classic rock sound and have been opening up for Lady Gaga on her current tour. They even started a bidding war finally ending up on Pharrell Williams label Star Trak. Check the New Times link above for more info.
Here is the track that I love by them called 'She Loves Everybody' about a girl who well, loves everybody! We all know a few girls like that. The video's pretty funny too. The girl starts kicking their asses after they talk smack in front of her! Dude wait till she leaves the room at least.
