Death & Rebirth :: Lotus Eater + Debut EP

Got sent this excellent instrumental post punk track "Lotus Eater" by new Portland duo Death & Rebirth. It is a slow building tune similar to something Mogwai might put out. Love the intensity and power of it, we have had it on repeat at OTR headquarters the last few days.

Check out the tune below, which if you like they are giving away as a free download on their soundcloud in exchange for some social media love. Also be on the lookout for their Debut EP Taijitu which is being released August 15th on New Dawn Collective. Definitely a band to keep your eye on.

Opal Blue :: Way Down

Got sent this excellent dark electronic track "Way Down" by faceless London duo Opal Blue. It is made up of reprocessed vocals and out-of-tune instruments, and it is pretty amazing! It is their first track from their upcoming debut EP She Goes Deep. If this track is any indication of what's to come, we are in for a treat!

Clovis Points :: Razz

One door closes and another opens, that is the case with our buddy Oscar (formerly of Crown Company) and his new band Clovis Points which features Kasey Varga on drums, Roger Del Pino of Miami electronic duo, Monterrey on bass and Oscar Sardinia on guitar and vocals. They sent over their first track "Razz" and we are digging it! It has a distinctive 90's alternative rock sound like the one's we grew up listening to. It would be great to get a resurgence of that style. Love Oscar's vocals! Can't wait to hear what else they come up with. They are a brand new band after all.

Check out first track "Razz" which if you like, they are giving away as a free download.

Broods :: Mother & Father

The other day as I was searching for new tunes I ran into this great track "Mother & Father" by New Zealand brother sister duo Broods. Such a powerful/emotional track about the pains of growing up and becoming your own person, got my attention quick. In addition to this new single they also have a self titled EP that you can check out with another solid track "Bridges".

Check out the soundcloud and video for those two below. Good to have you on our radar. Sure we'll be hearing more from them in the months/years to come.

Kajak :: Gold Crowned Eagle

How about some international love today? Kajak is an electro-pop duo from Iceland featuring two cousins who have been getting a lot of love from their home country. They sent us their debut single "Gold Crowned Eagle" and I am digging the sounds. They have a very big/catchy sound. I am sure they will be going far. Seems they are working on their debut album, can't wait to hear that. For now check out their soundcloud/video for their excellent debut single. Good to have you guys on our Radar!

The Vacant Lots :: Mad Mary Jones

If you are into psych rock then you are gonna love this US band that was sent our way called The Vacant Lots. They are getting ready to release their debut album 'Departure' July 1st on Sonic Cathedral. Just thirty seconds into opening track "Mad Mary Jones" and I was instantly hooked! They have a great psychedelic rock sound that is intoxicating. Can a guitar revival be on the rise? One can only hope. It's definitely been missed the last few years as dance music and house sounds have taken the lead, but as we know with music and fashion, everything cycles back eventually. Here's to hoping for a revival of those lovely guitar sounds.

Check out their soundcloud/video for "Mad Mary Jones" below, then be on the lookout for their debut album 'Departure' come July.

Favored Nations :: Blame Game

Got sent this lovely indie pop tune "Blame Game" by a talented new trio called Favored Nations. Between the three of them they have plenty of experience. Having worked with acts/labels such as Justice, Phenomenal Handclap Band, Greenskeepers, DFA, Empire of the Sun & The Swiss. Needless to say they are an experienced bunch of fellows that should do just fine. Their sound most reminds me of bands like Empire of the Sun. So if you dig Empire chances are you will enjoy Favored Nations as well. They will be releasing their debut 3 track EP July 18th which I have heard and is really nice!

Check out first single "Blame Game" that should get your interests going. We'll be keeping an eye out for this great new band.

Villa Kang :: Touch of Evil

Don't know much about Toranto trio Villa Kang, except that they are some talented folks! Loving the track they sent our way "Touch of Evil". Great groovy loop filled jam. Best part is they are offering the track as a free download. Can't beat that, check it out below. Video in the works.

Hunter Hunted

Talk about a duo that have accomplished a lot in a short amount of time. LA's Hunter Hunted would definitely fit the bill. Having just formed in January of this year they have already been named as a band to look out for in Nylon, Billboard and MTV, as well as performing Live on Conan. All while being unsigned. After listening to their music, I can see why they've done so well. Great indie pop/rock, especially from an act so early in their career.

Check out a couple of tracks below from their self titled debut EP "Keep Together" and "Operating", plus an excellent remix of "Keep Together" by Spacebrother that ups the ante, as well as their performance on Conan. You can hear the rest of their EP on their soundcloud

Theme Park :: Theme Park (Album Review)

There are few bands who could make their whole album into my MP3 player. Most of us, if anything, select a 2-3 tracks and move on. This, however, has not been the case with Theme Park's self-titled debut album. The British band's album has been on repeat ever since it came out 2 weeks ago, and up to now, it is in my short list for "Albums of the Year".

The trio has managed to compose 11 tracks that should provide a worth-while experience. They go from synth-pop to new wave to island-esque sounds effortlessly. The only drawback to the album was their exclusion of "Milk" and "A Mountain of Love", which are really good tracks.

Overall, this album gets a 4 out of 5.

Track Listing:

1. Big Dream -  has a good baseline and is just the appetizer, enticing the ears.

2. Jamaica - This perhaps has become my favorite track. It has this really fun, and summer vibe that I can't help, but want to dance.

3. Two Hours - has an 80's INXS vibe, but without the voice. It's just a nice song to spin around the room dancing.

4. A Place They'll Never Know - 80's synth-pop sound to it. It has a slow vibe, but could be an early morning track on the dance floor. The bridge of the song leaves the possibility for a remix.

5. Tonight - is just fun. This song has become the first song I play before heading out for the night. It should work itself into the dance floor in some clubs. I expect a remix of this song. It has limitless potential.

6. Saccades (Lines We Delay) - Every album has the intermission track. This one is it. It's the album's interlude. The track gets going around the 2:06 mark.

7. Wax - the first track I heard from this amazing band. How good is this track? Well, it made me want to get an RSS feed on them. For some reason, I like the single version better.

8. Ghosts - has a great Jamaican/funky riff. This is really a nice "romantic" song with a mid-afternoon pre-party vibe.

9. Still Life - The second slow paced song. This track is ok. It does have a good baseline. It should be a song they play at the end of their shows.

10. Los Chikas - grammatically incorrect in Spanish. At 2 minutes this track is really background noise and their weakest link. They could have added "Milk" instead.

11. Blind - a down tempo song that, to me, has a similarity to "Ghosts". It is still a good track and definitely worth a listen.

Honorable Mentions

The singles of this album have some good B-Sides. These include:

1. A Mountain We Love - could be found on the Wax EP. It could have easily taken the place of "Still Life"

2. Milk - the second song I heard from this band. As stated above, it could have easily replaced half of the songs in this album. It is a really good track that got left out of the album. I guess something to get people to buy the singles.

Clear Plastic Masks

Clear Plastic Masks are pissing off my neighbors. I am listening to the few songs I can find online so loud they can only assume I'm a thirteen year old boy who hates their parents. These guys are Nashville based, but let's face it, they're musicians so they are pretty much smelly homeless people, but who cares. They are restoring my faith in rock and roll. Also their self titled LP is only available at shows which is genius. Pretty much says if you want me, come and find me so I can show you I am that good. Their songs are like snake charmers sucking you in with soulful lyrics and explosive musical arrangements. The drums, the guitars, the organs. Try not to like this band, I dare you.

Check out some tunes/videos below and check out their tour dates here

Little Daylight :: Overdose

Not sure where the trio known as Little Daylight are from, but apparently after putting out a bunch of cool remixes they released their own original track "Overdose" recently and then quickly managed to reach #1 on Hype Machine. Pretty impressive achievement and I can see why. Amazingly catchy indie pop tune. Glad to have them on our Radar.

Check out their soundcloud/video for "Overdose" below. You can hear more of their remixes on their tumblr here. Enjoy!

Ultraísta :: Small Talk + Four Tet (Remix)

I often wondered what a band helmed by Nigel Godrich would sound like. I always loved his contribution as a producer to the Radiohead albums. In many ways he has been partially responsible for Radiohead's success.

Well I guess, I don't have to wait any longer. Godrich has formed Ultraísta. The group is also composed of Joey Waronker and artist Laura Bettinson. The band was "conceived from a love of Afro-beat, electronica, art and inspired by Tequila." I really enjoyed the original version of "Small Talk", but found the remix by Four Tet even sexier.

Stockers! :: Times Before

You know it's hard to come by a good new indie rock band these days. The musical landscape is just nothing like what it was circa 2004 when indie rock was king. When acts like Franz Ferdinand, The Editors, The Strokes, Bloc Party, The Killers, etc ruled the charts and dance floors. Cue Helsinki, Finland band Stockers! who contacted us the other day and who I believe would fit right in with that top notch tier of bands. They sent along their new single "Times Before" from their upcoming debut album 'We Are the Numbers' scheduled for release October 19th and made believers of me. Just like with fashion, most musical trends tend to come and go and I'm sure indie rock will trek back around one of these days. These guys are a good reminder of what some good guitars, solid vocals and danceable beats can do. Namely create mayhem on the dance floor.

Blouse

Gotta love music recommends from friends, especially when they consistently give you good finds. Like this latest recommend my friend Rocky Grimes who designed our OTR tee's gave me for Portland, Oregon three piece band Blouse. Did some investigating and seems like they have been garnering lots of attention. Making it onto Gorrilla Vs Bear's top tracks of 2011 and being featured in magazines like Nylon, Fader & Spin. They have a dark lo-fi sound with dreamy female vocals that I'm always attracted to.

Here's a couple great tracks from their self titled debut album "Videotapes" and "Into Black" that will be a good introduction, plus their video for "Videotapes". If you dig these I'd grab the rest of the record. Good stuff!

Black Light Dinner Party

Black Light Dinner Party is a group of four anonymous producers from the US. Their reps sent along their second single "Small Boxes" which is a great tune, but the one that really caught my attention was first single "Older Together" that was released a few months ago. What a gorgeous tune with an amazingly beautiful melody. Check out both tracks below via their soundclouds and available as free downloads. I'd grab those pronto! In addition to the soundclouds here's their video for "Older Together". Enjoy and keep up the good work BLDP, you'll definitely be on our Radar from here on out.

De La Montaña

Recently stumbled upon this great, eclectic little Berlin based band calling themselves De La Montaña. The troupe's lead man Madison Velding-VanDam, who is actually from Ann Arbor, Michigan originally, draws his influences from a wide range including his love of indie rock and folk, the strong electronic scene in nearby Detroit and 80's pop as well as his travels to Chile and finally Berlin, Germany (picking up fellow Chilean and German band members along the way) where the band is currently working hard to make a name for themselves in the music scene. This diverse array of influences has culminated in a fantastically original sound and along with some catchy hooks and quality lyricism, I see these guys catching on fast! Always an honour to be amongst the first to catch on to these acts that you just get the sense are on the virge of a blogosphere explosion!

Here are a few tracks as well as a great video for you to enjoy and get a taste of what we can expect from these guys. Also take the time to visit their bandcamp and hear more!

The Denzels

The Denzels 'Slow Death' EP has been thrown into a lot of my playlists ever since meeting one of the band members out at a bar in Brooklyn a few weeks ago. The Denzels surf laced, melancholic indie rock is just catchy. Their songs are well written and recorded which makes it simply just really easy to listen to. It's a dash of The Drums, The Strokes pop sensibility, with just a touch of The Walkmen's shoe gazed guitars. They're a melting pot of New York cities most successful acts. The snare and guitars off the track "Montrose Next Door" are sonic romance. Can't wait to hear more from these guys. Download the full (and free) EP off their bandcamp!

Saint Motel

LA indie pop band Saint Motel recently contacted us with news that they are giving away their infectious new single "Puzzle Pieces" so I had to share this beaut with our readers. So good, can't wait to hear more. In the meantime make like a bandit, download this baby and run! Video for the track is in the works. We'll keep you posted.

Little Majorette

Sweden is at it again producing another great act. This time it's indie pop trio Little Majorette. They got together after working on other artists music and then liking it when they did it themselves better, so they decided to have a go at it. Glad they did cause it's lovely stuff! Here is their latest video for "Never Be the Same", plus their mp3 for "Overflow" that I spotted on Hype Machine. Both fantastic tunes! Prepare to fall in love with Little Majorette.
