Proof I Exist :: Suburban Sci-Fi

Surfer Blood :: Tarot Classics
South Florida band Surfer Blood who have been getting tons of amazing press the last couple of years are getting ready to release a new EP entitled 'Tarot Classics' Oct. 24th on Kanine Records. The first single from the EP "Miranda" was premiered on Pitchfork and it is a rollicking good time that you can check out below. Talk about big time, the boys are even gonna be opening up for The Pixies in an upcoming tour! Pretty mind blowing stuff. Keep making us proud.

Body Wash :: Merdered EP
In the mood for some excellent new experimental psychedelic indie surf rock? Well you are in the right place! Another Off The Radar brand new artist debut, Chicago based musician Body Wash recently released his debut Merdered EP. Raw, gritty, honest and quite brilliant, the Merdered EP is an amazingly solid first album, filled with layers of lo-fi goodness, fuzzy vocals and super catchy acoustic riffs, with that unmistakeably garage sound. The album in its entirety is available on his bandcamp as a name-your-price download, so you can pick it up for free, but as always we like to suggest you support the artists and send a few bucks their way for their efforts. Body Wash is definitely gonna be an artist to watch for in the future, and I have a strong suspicion that once this EP catches, its gonna spread like wild fire across the blog community. Enjoy these few tracks and video here, then head on over and check out/pick up the rest of the album.

The Denzels
The Denzels 'Slow Death' EP has been thrown into a lot of my playlists ever since meeting one of the band members out at a bar in Brooklyn a few weeks ago. The Denzels surf laced, melancholic indie rock is just catchy. Their songs are well written and recorded which makes it simply just really easy to listen to. It's a dash of The Drums, The Strokes pop sensibility, with just a touch of The Walkmen's shoe gazed guitars. They're a melting pot of New York cities most successful acts. The snare and guitars off the track "Montrose Next Door" are sonic romance. Can't wait to hear more from these guys. Download the full (and free) EP off their bandcamp!

League
Meet London's electro-pop newcomers League, a duo composed of a former architecture and a former journalism student who dropped out to pursue a life of beach bumming and music making. The result is an intriguing, upbeat blend of synth laden electro-pop, psychedelia & surf rock. Here are two shining examples off their Golden Maps EP released earlier this year.

Chains of Love
Gotta say I am loving a lot of the new music coming out of my birth nation of Canada lately. The latest of which I recently stumbled on is Vancouver band Chains of Love. While I know the whole retro/throwback/surf-rock/garage-rock thing isn't exactly groundbreaking these days, this female fronted 6-piece pulls off that gritty 60's girl band sound so brilliantly, they almost reinvent it. Hell, they could have been right there with The Ronettes, the Shangri-la's or the Crystals! I just picture myself beach bound in a bright red '67 GTO Convertible listening to this on a fuzzy AM radio. I love it.

Art Imperial
If you are planning on heading to the beach anytime in the near future, you may want to add Toronto surf-rock inspired musician Art Imperial's new EP Surf Suburban to your collection to set the mood. Following the same path as other great indie bands such as Best Coast and Wavves, this summery album is set for a strategically timed May 14th release. Check out/pickup the albums first track here, then head one over to their bandcamp and listen to the rest.

The Young Friends
Listening to The Young Friends is like bathing in the fountain of youth inside of an endless summer. Andrew McKee and Brant Stuns met on Myspace and played in a few bands in Arizona before deciding to make surf rock after a trip to the beach inspired them. Jacob Graham of The Drums heard them on Myspace and decided to release some tracks on his experimental record label Holiday Records. Basically he finds unknown artists and releases a single or an EP every friday via their website. They now live in NYC playing music as a trio and their record "Hella" is available for purchase on iTunes and Zune. The Young Friends sounds a lot like The Drums, but they have more cutesy dances and sing indie pop better.

French Films
Got sent this amazing track "Golden Sea" by Finland based band French Films from their 4 track Golden Sea EP available now on iTunes. They have a little Joy Division vibe mixed with an upbeat surf rock twang that I'm loving! My spider senses tell me these guys will be going a long way. They are currently working on their debut album. Can't wait for that! In the meantime here is their MP3 for "Golden Sea" cleared for posting in full 320 bit rate, plus their sweet fuzzy winter time feeling video for said track. Hopefully these make you instant fans like it did for me.

Surf City
Got sent this excellent fuzzy guitar jam called "Kudos" the other day by New Zealand band Surf City. It features a lot of poppy 'wooo, wooo, wooos' that I'm always a sucker for. Seems they got their name from Jesus and Mary Chain (a fine band to be inspired by). Their debut album also called Kudos is scheduled for release November 30th on Fire Records. Already having positive reviews on Pitchfork and Stereogum. They definitely show a lot of potential, especially if you love guitars as much as me. Check it...

New Girls Track
San Francisco's Girls releases their new record "Broken Dreams Club" November 22, and is offering "Heartbreaker" as a free download. As the follow up to critically successful "Album" there is a bit of pressure but the buzz is good and I am loving this feel good anthem about love lost. If you have a second, read the bio on this duo. Christopher Owens, the lead singer, is a former "Children Of God" cult member and it's an interesting journey that led him to San Fran and meeting young and green music producer JR White. Check out a live performance of the song "Heartbreaker" below and the track for you to stream. If you dig it pick up that track via the link I posted above.

The Finkielkrauts
Although I wasn't able to find much English information written about The Finkielkrauts from France (it was all written in French and I only know un petit peu from my high school days), their EP is great! I am really loving their sound and this track, "Cocksucker No Blues" that I'm posting below.
Their first EP "Distance" came out in February on the label Another Record from France. The label describes them as "Noisy Cold Wave". Some of the songs instrumentation also gives off a surf rock feel. You can purchase the EP here. They have some tour dates in France now through Fall/Winter so if you live in France or are headed that way, I would definitely check them out!

Best Coast
Best Coast's album "Crazy For You" is overtly girly in the most gratifying way. I listen to it and it makes me want to scribble my lover's name in my twilight books while waiting for my nail polish to dry. Bethany Cosentino brings this sense of longing to the music that just melts even the toughest of girls, because any one who has had a crush can't (and shouldn't) resist this shoegazy surf rock. This Duo from Los Angeles is being heavily praised by critics and rightfully so. Great album, definitely pick it up upon release July 27th!!
Fall in love with the tracks "Boyfriend" and "I Want To" below.
