The Hills Are Alive With The Sound of Chromeo

Alright guys, so Chromeo has made it to MTV. The Hills to be exact. I use to be selfish, get my music and hide and tell as few people (only if they were worthy) about my finds. (No Chromeo is not my find, I'll leave that to Ari when he played Needy Girl a couple years back at Buck 15).

But I realized that Chromeo is going to move on to Gap commercials and bigger and bigger festivals and there is honestly nothing I can do about it. And I don't plan to by a whiny bitch and talk about how MTV does not play music anymore and just ruins things and blah blah. Who cares?

How many artists have debuted since Chromeo? Just keep looking for the next "hidden" gem.

In the meantime, in all things Chromeo, Vice Records is declaring this week Chromeo Jaxxy week and are giving away a track-a-day of the duo.

Live From Daryl's House

You guys have to hop on over to Daryl Hall's website (of Hall & Oates fame duh - we have some young readers, I'm sorry), and check out episode 10 with his guests Chromeo. I have had the item unread for about a week, until I could sit down and truly enjoy the webcast.

In the show, Daryl Hall, along with his musicians and Dave 1 and P-Thugg ,rip through a bunch of Hall & Oates classics as well a couple of Chromeo hits. The Canadian duo look semi-starstruck as Hall explains some of the techniques used to record classics like Private Eyes, I Can't Go For That (No Can Do), Kiss On My List... He even invites them to the indoor pool of his house THAT WAS BUILT IN THE 1700's! Yeah, Hall's hobby is restoring old homes out in Southern Connecticut. Who woulda thunk it?

It is funny, I have a few friends that are just discovering Chromeo. So now I am hearing tracks that I have not heard in a couple of years and enjoying them all over again.

New Chromeo

Finally Chromeo are back with some new stuff! About time, right?? Its been something like two years since we've heard any new original work from them. And I am loving their the new dark disco track 'Night By Night!' It's not exactly a sound we haven't already heard from them, but then again, why fix something that isn't broken, right?

The new song has also inspired a killer remix by Canadian mix artist The Tremulance, that really slows the tempo, ups the synth and amps the bass. Good stuff!

Chromeo Returns

Here's the video for Chromeo's new single "Don't Turn the Lights On" from their forthcoming album 'Business Casual' being released September 14th. Those eyes in the dark look pretty spooky. I sure as heck wouldn't wanna see any of those eyes popping out of the dark in front of me. Ben Stiller kinda did something similar in that scene in the coal mines in Zoolander were he was all blacked out and jumped out from the dark. Peek-a-boo! Haha...

Nothing too radically different here as far as sound. Kinda their trademark electronic pop formula. Pretty cool, but I hope the album has some growth to it. I hate when artists remain too stagnant with their sound. I like my artists to experiment a little, show some musical growth. We shall see.

Midnight Conspiracy is a DJ trio from Chicago. Recently they sent us a remix of Chromeo's track 'Night by Night' that I am digging more than the original! Chromeo :: White Women

Loving the new Chromeo album 'White Women' that was just released. It incorporates a bunch of different styles from pop, smooth rock, funk, disco with an 80's feel to it. I liken them to a modern day Hall & Oates. You can definitely tell they were influenced by bands like that. With this album they seem to have made a concerted effort to create carefully crafted sublime tracks that will stand the test of time. More so than their previous albums, which were good, but more straight up dance floor tracks. Good from beginning to the end, they are definitely hitting their groove with this one. Recommended!

Top Singles of 2007!!

This year more than previous years I have been listening to individual songs more than whole albums. Don't get me wrong there have been some great albums released this year that I like and listen to (Interpol, Midnight Juggernauts, Arctic Monkeys, Blonde Redhead, The National, The Shins, etc...) Check out some of Chris' great choices too, but due to my process of finding new music nowadays (other music Blogs like Off the Radar), once or twice a month I compile all the best new tracks I find and put them into mix CD's which I then use to play out at clubs/parties. Survival of the fittest then ensues. As time goes by there always seem to be some tracks that you notice people dance more, request more and generally outlast the others. Those usually tend to be my favorites. If you can hear a track over and over and not get bored of it the artists are doing something right. Believe me I get bored pretty fast of the crappy stuff, so you better have a catchy chorus and some melodies! I am after all a pop music fan...

Here are some of my favorite tracks of 2007! Like Chris said I'm sure I missed some good ones but these are a pretty solid bunch.

Midnight Juggernauts - Road to Recovery (YSI)

Probably one of my favorite tracks and favorite new bands of 2007! 'Road to Recovery' was the first track I ever heard from this Australian Electronic Pop/Rock trio and it's still my favorite, although 'Into the Galaxy' is a strong second. When that chorus kicks in it's heavenly... Great video for this too. Don't think their album 'Dystopia' is available as a domestic release in the U.S. yet. Why not?!? The Import is worth getting.

Digitalism - Pogo (YSI)

Everytime I hear 'Pogo' it makes me wanna dance! Such a smart dance song that doesn't suffer from repeated listenings. Mike Deuce did a great b-more remix of this too that I play out alot as well.Riot in Belgium - La Musique (YSI)

One of the biggest dance hits of the year! Started in the Summer and still going strong. This song always gets people jumping on the dancefloor. Just don't fade it out until that vocal kicks in after the break and people go nuts! Can't wait to see what they can do with a full length album in 08' They put out some solid dance remixes in 07' that are also worth getting.

Hot Chip - Ready for the Floor (YSI)

Wow! What an amazing preview single for their upcoming album. It's pretty irrisistable and reminds me a lot of their big hit 'Over and Over' which definitely stood the test of time. I think this one will too. A dancefloor jem. People always come up to me to ask who this is whenever I play it out. Can't wait for the full length.

Simian Mobile Disco - I Believe (YSI)

Love this Track! It melds electronics but with warmth that is hard to find in electronic music. I don't play it out so much cause the BPMs are lower, but I definitely played this one out alot at home around the middle of the year, around the same time I found out about Midnight Juggernauts. Still sounds amazing! Hustler was another track of theirs that was pretty huge in 07' and much easier to mix with.

Zoot Woman - We Won't Break

A late addition to 07' just barely made it in Dec, but it's classic Zoot Woman. 3 mins long and no filler! Catchy, dancey, pop that Zoot Woman do so well. They released this as a stand alone single. Can't wait for a full length from them in 08', they never let me down.

Chromeo - Fancy Footwork (YSI)

Chromeo came on strong in 07'! They must have had at least 3 solid singles including this one, Bonafied Lovin' and Tenderoni which was the first single and my least favorite. Fancy Footwork is also the title song to their album and probably my favorite of the bunch. It's so irrisistably catchy and danceable with those female vocals chanting ' Two Step, Two Step..' It just makes you bust out those moves on the dancefloor as the lyrics implore you to, so you can get the girl, of course! Woo!

Feist - My Moon, My Man (YSI)

One of the mellower and more commercial artists to make it into my top singles, but it's just a great song! Love the video for this too. Very memorable with her going backwards on that people mover thingie like they have at Disney.

Zeigeist - Black Milk (YSI)

One of the darker/gothier bands to make it. I just love these guys. Burned out this song around the middle of the year. They do stuff reminiscent to early Fischerspooner or The Knife were they mix performance art and dark electronic pop music. Some amazing pics on their MySpace page. Hopefully I'll get to see a live show one day. Gotta be a fun show!

Union of Knives - Evil Has Never (YSI)

I think this was released in late 06', but I found out about it played it out like crazy in 07'. Such a great pop song with those amazing lyrics and great back and forth male/female vocals like Postal Service did in 'Nothing Better' or Human League's Classic 'Don't You Want Me'. It's like a couple going back and forth trying to prove their point. Great track and totally danceable... Love those lyrics 'What do you mean'

The Glamour - Get In to It (YSI)

Great party song that I still play out even after months. Easy to mix this into bands like Daft Punk due to the danceability factor. The lyrics just implore you to get into it and dance your ass off. Noble cause no? I think their unsigned too. Wonder when a label will snatch these guys up. Not too long I'm sure...

The Teenagers - Starlett Johansson (YSI)

One of my favorite tracks of the last part of the year! Probably due to the fact that they obsess over Scarlett Johansson as much as I do. It's a classic pop track, filled with hooks and melodies. I never get tired of that. They also did some great remixes for other artists in 07' I'm sure these kids have a bright future ahead of them.

Calvin Harris - Acceptable in the 80's (YSI)

This quirky electro-pop artist made a pretty good splash in 07' At first I didn't know if I could play this out cause of it's quirky factor, but then I started hearing other DJ's playing it out and people digging it so that was the end of that thought. 'The Girls' was another great single of his this year proclaiming his love for women of all shapes, sizes and colors. It already spawned a reverse cover called 'The Boys' by Dragonette with all the lyrics reversed to the oppsosite sex. Brilliant!

The Virgins - Rich Girls (YSI)

More of a traditional rock track than the rest of the stuff here, but irrisistable and dancey as well! I played this one out more in my own time. The lyrics are amazing. It's like he's telling you a story and you wanna hear what he has to say. I love when he says in a nonchalant way 'You don't have to be such an asshole all the time' We can all relate to people like that.

LO-FI-FNK - Wake Up (YSI)

Saw these guys perform here in Miami last year and they had me dancing the whole time. They got the knack for catchy, dancey electro pop tracks reminiscent of bands like Cut Copy. Their super young too, I'm sure they have a great career ahead of them with tracks like this.

Holy Ghost! - Hold On

Solid dance track with great lyrics, melody and hooks. They're on DFA Records too. It's more subdued and classic sounding than some of the stuff here and will probably sound like a classic years from now. It also reminds me a bit of Freestyle music as well, don't know why. Love that lyric 'It's like Scream inside a Scream'

Chemical Brothers - Do It Again (YSI)

This track is Classic Chemical Brothers! Complete with Big Beat, and quirky sounds. If you don't like this track your probably not a Chemical Brothers fan.

Roisin Murphy - Overpowered (YSI)

This song was recommended to me one night by someone at Circa Saturdays. They kept raving about how amazing it was and for me to play it at the club. So I remembered it and got it the next day. Don't know if it's the right track for a club at least not prime time, but for the home and car it's amazing! I can hear her beautiful voice over and over and never get bored. Great late night track!

Workin' for the Weekend...

It's FRIIIIIDAY!! What? You thought we were going to leave you high and dry as you planned your playlist for the weekend? Come on now, we got the tracks to keep your body shakin' straight through 'till Sunday night!!

First up is a relatively new group from the Midwest, called Codebreaker (I'm talking Milwaukee here people! Schlemeel, schlemazel, hasenfeffer incorporated stuff). But do not let that fool you. Sebastian Tellier

French singer and multi-instrumentalist Sebastian Tellier is back, with a brand new offering entitled Kilometer EP. It highlights Kilometer and Roche... two songs from last year's Sexuality album which was produced by Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo, of Daft Punk fame.

The new EP, features remixes by some of the most talked about producers of 2009: A-Trak (DMC Champion and Kanye West’s DJ), Aeroplane ‘Italo 84’, Kavinsky and Arpanet. All the remixes are great, but my favorites so far are the A-Trak remix of Kilometer and Kavinsky's take on Roche. The former is a great nu disco jam, with a great bass line and electro pop synths reminiscent of Chromeo (due to the fact that A-Trak's big brother , Dave 1 of Chromeo, co-produced the track with him).

The latter is a laid-back version of the song which reminds me a lot of Air and some of the mellower Daft Punk tracks. All in all, a very good EP. I highly recommend you go out and get it!

Lollapalooza Review

So I just got back from the wonderful city of Chicago where my three days at Grant Park for Lollapalooza could be summed up in two words: amazing and exhausting! With a lineup that was even more fantastical in fruition than it looked on paper, there were a few bands that stood out above the rest as the clear highlights of a solid weekend.

The Highlights:

Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros. Now, this is the first time I've seen them live and I had heard tales of their amazing stage presence before, giving me high expectations going in. They went above and beyond. Seemed like everything fell into place for this one including the setting. They played a small stage in a grassy clearing surrounded by trees, which perfectly complimented their hippie ambiance. Believe me, if you haven't seen them live yet, you are missing out!

Cut Copy. I think what I loved most about Cut Copy's performance this time was that when they played I believe a lot of people were off trying to get a good spot for Green Day or Phoenix, so while there was a good amount of people around, there was still space to breathe and move, unlike at lots of shows that were overly crowded (like MGMT.) Thus we were able to get pretty close to make the most of their outstanding performance.


Yeasayer. They've been one of my fave bands of the last few years, so I was really looking forward to seeing them. They were as fun to watch as they are to listen to! They're one of those bands whose music sounds even better live than it does recorded. I loved it! They are doing a pretty extensive east coast tour this Fall, so definitely catch them if they are in your area! I recorded a short clip of them performing '2080', sorry for the poor quality.



The Arcade Fire. Wow. Thats all I have to say. Arcade Fire were beyond being the icing on the cake at the end of a mind blowing weekend! As one of my favourite bands ever, I had been hearing wonderful things of their NYC performance just days before this show, and despite playing a stage plagued with sound problems throughout the weekend, they killed it! Soo good. If they tour near you soon, GO SEE THEM!

Honourable Mention:

Dragonette. She went on early in the day on a small stage to a crowd that for the most part didn't really even know who she was. To be honest I went to see her as filler between shows because I was always fond of her 'Fixin to Thrill' track. I was impressed. Acts like her and Arcade Fire this weekend made me proud of my Canadian heritage.

Empire of the Sun. Weren't gonna see them at first actually cuz they played at the same time as Phoenix. But sure am glad I did, what a visually incredible show!

There were many other great ones, MGMT of course, The Antlers, Chromeo, Hot Chip and The Strokes were all really good. But those were the main highlights of my weekend.

Music To Know Festival

Been hearing whispers about a festival happening in the Hamptons this summer and they finally released all the details. I have spent a lot of time in the Hamptons and it's exciting to that music is going to be part of the summer scene. The festival entitled Music To Know or MTK has Vampire Weekend and Bright Eyes headlining with a lot of bands we have mentioned on Off The Radar over the last few years like Chromeo, Tame Impala (one of my favorite albums and live shows of 2010), Young Empires, and The Naked and Famous. Also really excited about Ra Ra Riot as well as M. Ward. For a full line up and ticket information head to their website. One band we over looked worth mentioning is Fitz and the Tantrums. Sometimes things are just too big to be on our radar.


Fitz and the Tantrums is rousing horns combined with organs and killer beats for a timeless sound that is bound to have you tapping your feet. The combination of Fitz and Noelle Scaggs vocals is just undeniable and so fun to see live. If you don't have their album 'Picking Up The Pieces' stream it (and buy it!). Check out the official video for my favorite tune by them "Moneygrabber". I remember Fitz being a Hamptons fixture in my first few summers out there and am sure he will feel right at home on that stage.

MNDR

London Label Something In Construction put out a fantastic compilation to celebrate one hundred releases. It's free so you should definitely take a second to download.

One band I hadn't really checked out before was Los Angeles' MNDR. Their minimal electro and fun vocals are yummy pop perfect to listen to when you're getting dolled up for a night of trouble. So Fun, reminds me of 'The Blow' who I used to be obsessed with. They're currently touring with Chromeo so go to their official website to see if you can catch them! "I Go Away" is a slowed down electro ballad and I can't get enough.

We Are Standard

We Are Standard are an indie rock/post punk band from Spain. Recently their reps contacted us and sent us their excellent self titled debut album being released April 26th on Mushroom Pillow. It was recorded in the span of 8 months of back and forth travel between Spain and the UK and it was produced by Andy Gill of Gang of Four fame. Here's some of what their press release had to say about Andy::

The idea behind putting Andy Gill at the controls was to give the band a more minimal sound “We figured he’d strip down the recording, take out some instruments, and give the songs space to breathe. We were expecting something like an electro version of Entertainment! What we didn’t expect, but were equally thrilled to find, was a producer and a band testing the limits of studio production”. ‘We Are Standard’ was polished off and mastered by Simon Davey (Chromeo, Amy Winehouse, DJ Shadow, Scissor Sisters).

Fans of angular type rock bands like Gang of Four, Franz Ferdinand or even The Rapture will love this record! Really great guitar record and great guitar records are hard to come by these days. My favorite songs from the 9 track album are track #3 "The Last Time" their new single released April 5th which has this great borderline R rated video for it as well as a great Arthur Baker Remix of it sitting pretty in the track #8 spot. Also loving "Bye, Bye, Bye", "Easy", "Dont Let The Children Play Around", plus "The First Girl Who Got a Kiss Without a Please" which happens to be the track they've let us post as free download. Sweeet-ness! This track and video will give you a pretty good idea of their sound and hopefully get you excited to find out more about this great up and coming Spanish band. They definitely made fans here at Off the Radar!

Cassius :: New Single "I Love U So" / Remixes

After a 4 year absence since their last album '15 Again' french house duo Cassius return with a fresh new single called "I Love U So". It is being released February 28th on Ed Banger Records. The single got the big remix treatment as they enlisted heavyweights like Skream and Bowski. You can stream the Skream remix on their Last FM page here. There's also a bunch of other remixes for download there. In addition to those I've gotten a sweet remix of "I Love U So" by Popskarr as well as a remix by Gesaffelstein for another of their tracks "Les Enfants" that will also be part of the single package. P.S. Just in case you didn't know Zdar from Cassius is also highly sought after for his production work. Coachella Is Trippin'

I kept on talking about this the whole weekend. Coachella is going EAST! Coachella's promoter Goldenvoice is moving the music festival east this summer! It will take place at Liberty State Park, across the Hudson from lower Manhattan. It will not be named Coachella per se but RADIOHEAD is rumored to be headlining! Road trip anyone? The regular Coachella line up should be coming out today. The eastern Coachella details are still being finalized but it seems it will be in direct competition with the Vineland Festival also in New Jersey around the same time.

URB Magazine:

Portishead is confirmed to headline this year's Coachella festival on Saturday night, according to a high-level source. The same source unequivocally denied rumors that Radiohead would appear at Coachella, but did confirm that the group would play the East Coast festival being planned by Coachella promoters Goldenvoice/AEG Live . The full Coachella line-up will be announced this Monday.

I think this is the first Portishead post I write that actually has NEW songs of theirs! Take a listen to a new instrumental studio track and a couple other tracks from their December ATP Nightmare Before Christmas show (first full performance in over a decade!). I cannot wait to hear the studio versions of these songs. Ten years is a long time to wait between albums and I wonder if they can still be relevant.

It is impossible to see EVERYTHING at Coachella, so I was super-selectetive (that's a Miami phrase for you) highlighted what I think I would check out if I went. I chose acts that I have never seen (Okay, I have seen Kraftwerk but it's KRAFTWERK!). Acts that I think would present a good show (just because the music is good does not mean the show is entertaining). And those that I think will never make it to my neck of the woods (you would be surprised at the number of national tours that do not make it to Miami - and I don't want to start the "Miami doesn't have a music scene" argument right now... It apparently has something...). So this list is not necessarily complete, I am sure that if I was walking by a stage and Bonde Du Role was pumpin' out the booty jams I would stop and break a sweat or two (it's in our blood down here).

The real question is who is playing in Jersey?!?!?!

Oh and yes, Friday would be the day that I "leave early" from the show. Jack Johnson? WTF? Sorry.

Cherub :: 100 Bottles

One of my favorite newer acts Cherub just released a new record entitled 100 Bottles. The duo who hails from Nashville never fails to put the sex, drugs, and fun in their electro pop ditties and this record is just another example. Though it lacks a bonafied hit like "Doses and Mimosas" I'm really feeling all the tracks. Their sound is like Prince and Chromeo collaborated on a record in the future and made it deliciously crass.

Why does it take TWO years?

... for an album to come stateside? I still do not understand it. Money is at the root. Or lack there of. But it still does not make sense. There are popular/respected/established artists that still only see their albums released as $30 "import" editions. Perhaps this will change as digital music takes a stronger hold on the market. But I am still a sucker for a nicely packaged album. Have you seen the 3D cover for Arcade Fire's Neon Bible? The faux suede cover of The Beach Boys Pet Sounds? Or Radiohead's "book versions" of Kid A and Amnesiac?

Junior Senior had their last album (released in Japan in 2005) shelved for U.S. release until this year! 2 years later. What changed? Anyways, their album is finally coming out here in August minus the import sticker price.

The single sees them growing up a bit and throwing a little more vocal, a little more Chromeo (not as shiny though so we got some variety), and definitely some funk. They get a little help from Cindy Wilson and Kate Pierson of The B-52's!! By the end of song you can feel how much fun they had recording it.
